The amount of rubbish produced in Singapore during 1997 was 2.8 million tonnes. If all this rubbish were to be stacked in piles equivalent ti an average man's height of 1.7 metres, it would occupy 350 football fields.
The worst oil spill to date happened in 1989 when the oil tanker Exxon Valdez went too near the shore in Prince William Sound in Alaska, USA. The hull of the tanker was torn by sharp rocks and the oil it was carrying poured into the sea. More than 50 million litres of oil spread over a distance of 900 kilometres, killing millions of fish, at least 1000sea otters and almost 35000 birds. A total of US$843 million was spent on clearing up the area.
In September 1994, Singapore was enveloped in a smoky haze which made it difficult to see beyond a short distance in many areas. Some people thought that the hazy effect was interesting, but haze is actually a from of air pollution.
